Home Insurance

Your home is important to you and since it is probably the biggest investment you will ever make you will want to make sure it is protected. There are two main catagories of home insurance:

1) Buildings Insurance

Your mortgage lender will usually insist that you have buildings insurance in place before finalising the mortgage loan to protect their interest in the property. Buildings insurance will protect the permanent physical structures of the property and land, including garages and garden walls. It will usually also cover some permanent internal fixtures, such as sinks, toilets and baths.

2) Contents Insurance

Although not compulsary, you would be well advised to insure the internal contents of your property such as TV's, computers, audio equipment, clothes, carpets, sofas, dining tables and other furniture.
You can also specify to cover additional items that you take out of the home, such as mobile phones, laptops, handbags and wallets.
Also gardening equipment and bicycles can be added to your cover.

Contents cover is flexible and should be tailored to your exact requirements to make sure all your important items are protected.

 

Which type do I need?

Most people will have both types of cover and this will usually be combined into one policy. But there are circumstances where you may only need Buildings Insurance, or only Contents Cover.
For example, if you live in a block of flats then you will only need Contents Cover since your landlord will be responsible for insuring the building itself.
